What Is a Battery Box or Portable Power Station?

A battery box or portable power station is a compact, transportable unit that provides safe, off-grid electricity to power everything from fridges and lights to drones and laptops. The Power Box range includes models with built-in 12v control boxes, multiple USB ports, and inverters; giving you plug-and-play power without needing a fixed dual battery system.

These systems use cutting-edge lithium battery box technology and are perfect for camping trips and everyday work setups alike.

How Does It Work?

A PowerBox portable power station works by storing energy in a rechargeable lithium battery and converting it to AC power for various devices. It essentially acts as a battery pack with an inverter. The inverter converts the DC (direct current) power stored in the battery to AC (alternating current), which is the type of power most home appliances use.

It’s a portable battery system that just works, for your 4WD, ute, camper, boat or work vehicle.

Choose the Right Power Box Model

PB100 – Compact and Ready

The PB-100 is a lightweight, fully portable 12V dual battery system, ideal for powering fridges, electronic devices, small camping gear and any other basic camping power bank needs. Weighing just 17kg, it features a Redarc 1225D charger and 100Ah lithium battery capable of delivering up to 50A continuous draw with 1500+ cycles. Compact and easy to move between vehicles, boats, or campsites, it’s perfect for off-grid trips, beach days, or even weekend sport runs. With optional mounting trays and harnesses, the PB-100 delivers reliable, grab-and-go power wherever you need it.

PB150 – Versatile All-Rounder

The PB-150 is a powerful camping power station and a step up from the PB-100, offering added capability including support for a 1500W inverter, making it ideal for running multiple fridges, a coffee machine, and other 12V gear. It features a Redarc 1225D charger, 150Ah lithium battery, Victron Bluetooth smart shunt, and an extra 50A Anderson outlet for greater flexibility. Weighing 24kg and measuring 196mm x 646mm x 345mm, it’s still highly portable. With 6 colour options, the PB-150 isn’t just practical, it’s also a standout at any campsite.

PB200 – Maximum Output

The PB-200 is the ultimate 12V portable power system built for serious touring and canopy setups. A powerful battery box with inverter, packed with a 200Ah Powertech lithium battery, Redarc 1225D charger, and Victron Bluetooth smart shunt, it delivers robust power and real-time system monitoring. Designed for fixed installations but still fully portable, it includes 5 rocker switches for lighting, ovens, compressors, and more, plus a 12-pin flush Deutsch plug for safe disconnection. With inverter support up to 2000W, 4 x 50A Anderson plugs, USBs, and 12V sockets, the PB-200 powers just about anything you throw at it. It weighs 32kg and measures 266mm x 680mm x 345mm.

    What Customers Are Saying

    • “I have just completed an 1800km road trip and the battery worked as expected and kept the fridge running and the drinks cold. I especially like the fact that the battery is removable and able to be used in different applications (boat, camping, another vehicle…). Great product and thoroughly recommended!” Brett W.

    • “The day before a month-long north-west trip, I decided to drop a PB-150 into the trusty HiLux to power a big Engel fridge, a pie oven, a water tank pump and an air compressor. I had to wire in the power supply cable for the Power Box that I situated in the gap behind the wheel arch in the tub; it took 40 minutes and a half-dozen cable ties to route the Power Box’s pre-terminated and fused 5m in-vehicle charging cable. And as everything else – battery monitor, DC-DC charger etc. – is already wired in, that was it!

Recharging was done through the vehicle on this trip with no solar input, and the PB-150 lasted for days while sitting at camp, and was quick to recharge from its lowest point within a couple of hours of driving. The corrugations we encountered on the trip were enough to loosen fillings, but the PB-150 kept on doing its thing without any fuss. Even when doused with all the dust the Karijini could throw at it, the Power Box worked as it should.” Brad 4x4

    • “Purchased the 200Ah Power Box back in April 2023. Have been using it daily in my company-supplied vehicle to power my fridge to keep my lunch and drinks cold at work. On the weekend I can take it out and put it to use in my personal vehicle, or put it in the Mrs’s car so she can keep the shopping refrigerated. One Power Box servicing three vehicles! That's good value. It is an extremely well-made product and has operated flawlessly over the duration.

The ‘Smart Shunt’ is a great feature that allows you to wirelessly monitor the condition of the Power Box which is very handy. Whilst currently I'm not using this unit to anywhere near its capability, I know that when I add an inverter and solar panel to the system in the future that it will satisfy my power requirements with ease. I'm far from an expert with this technology, however, I believe you will be impressed with the capability of the Power Box as a versatile and fully portable dual battery system that can be moved from vehicle to vehicle or plug in a solar panel for a stand-alone unit.” Matt D.

    • “I have just come back from an 1800km, 8-day trip around the Wheatbelt, recording WA orchid species. This is the first opportunity I have had to use the product—running a fridge and taking full advantage of the charging outlets for lights, cameras, flashlight, and other devices.

I can offer no higher praise other than to say that it sits in the background and just works—it provides peace of mind, which is exactly what is required when everything depends on the Power Box.” Lindsay C.

    Power Box FAQs

Is the Power Box waterproof or does it have an IP rating?

No, the Power Box isn't fully waterproof and doesn't carry an official IP rating. That said, its construction and quality components are designed to withstand light splashes or minor exposure to moisture without any issues.

How can I check the battery charge level on my Power Box?

Every Power Box is equipped with a Victron battery monitor. To check your battery status, simply download the VictronConnect app to your smartphone. You can get the app from: Victron Downloads.

Can I connect an inverter to my Power Box?

Yes! Both the 150Ah and 200Ah Power Box models include an Anderson plug for easy inverter connection. You can find compatible accessories on our Powerbox Accessories page.

Is it possible to use a solar blanket for charging?

Absolutely. All Power Boxes come with a built-in red Anderson plug for solar input, which is managed by the Redarc charger—so no extra solar regulator is needed.

Will the Power Box drain my vehicle's main starting battery?

No. Thanks to the integrated Redarc BCDC1225 charger, the system includes a low-voltage cutoff feature that protects your starter battery from discharging.

Can I upgrade the built-in charger to a higher output model?

Yes, you can upgrade to a 40A charger for an additional $100 or to a 50A charger for $175.

If I upgrade to a 40A or 50A charger, can I still use the standard power cable?

No, a higher output charger requires a thicker cable to handle the increased current. You can either use dual wiring harnesses or request a custom 16mm² power cable from us.

What kind of warranty comes with the Power Box?

    Warranty coverage varies by component:

    • Redarc charger: 2 years
    • Powertech lithium battery: 3 years
    • Victron battery monitor: 5 years
    • Battery case: 3 years
    • Switches, outlets, and other parts: 12 months

If you experience any issues, please reach out to Power Box support via email for assistance.

Does the battery drain if the Power Box is not in use?

No. Newer Power Box models include a battery isolator switch on the front panel. When switched off, it prevents the battery from discharging during storage or downtime.

Can I replace the battery inside the Power Box?

Yes, the Power Box uses Powertech batteries, which are fully replaceable if needed down the line.

What should I do if a circuit fuse blows?

Power Boxes feature resettable circuit breakers. If a circuit trips, just push the breaker back in to reset it. If it happens again, double-check that the device you're connecting isn’t faulty.
