Outback Armour GVM Upgrade Explained

A complete, certified kit, engineered as a system

As towing and load-carrying rules changed, the GVM upgrade became essential to staying compliant and protecting your insurance. An Outback Armour kit is more than springs and shocks, it is the full suspension plus the compliance package. Note this is a GVM upgrade, not a GCM upgrade.

Every vehicle leaves the factory with a built-in safety margin, and a heavy touring or work fit-out quickly eats into it. An Outback Armour GVM upgrade raises the legal ceiling and re-engineers the suspension to carry it, with springs rated to your new GVM, matched shocks, air-bag and sway-bar hardware, and the compliance components that make the increase road-legal.

The kit is assembled around your load rating and your choice of shock valving, so the ride, control and stability suit how you actually use the vehicle, loaded or empty.

Outback Armour Digressive (DSV) shock absorbers

Digressive-tuned DSV shocks

Digressive (DSV) shock valving delivers consistent, controlled damping built for endurance touring and fleet use, a set-and-forget choice tuned for long-distance load carrying and durability.

Best for touring & fleet
Outback Armour Adjustable Internal Bypass (ADJ) shock absorbers

Adjustable Internal Bypass shocks

Adjustable Internal Bypass shocks give you 20+ damping settings so you can dial in compression to suit varying loads, on-road comfort or off-road control, without changing hardware.

Best for varied loads on- & off-road

What is in the kit

A complete, load-rated system, springs and shocks through to the compliance paperwork, chosen for your vehicle and your load rating rather than a one-size lift.

Front strut kits

Assembled front strut kits in your choice of Digressive (DSV) or Adjustable Internal Bypass (ADJ) valving.

Rear shocks, coils & hardware

Rear shocks and coils, coil-perch reinforcement, air-bag kit, bump-stop kit, plus sway bar and links.

Trail / Expedition / Expedition HD

Load ratings to match your build, from lighter touring loads through to heavy, permanently loaded rigs.

CAT 6 indicator & harness

CAT 6 indicator and wiring harness kit, part of the compliance package for a certified upgrade.

Auxiliary reverse-light kit

Auxiliary reverse-light kit supplied as part of the compliant GVM upgrade where required.

GVM document package

Owner’s manual supplement and tyre placard, so your new rating is documented on the vehicle.

Optional extras

Upper control arms, adjustable rear panhard rod, front sway bar and a stone-shield kit (ADJ) where you want them.

What is a GVM upgrade

Your build is probably already overweight.

Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is the legal maximum your 4×4 can weigh fully loaded, and it counts everything: the vehicle itself, bull bar, winch, fuel, water, food, people and the dog.

Built into your GVM is the tow-ball mass when towing, plus a rated capacity for each axle. Add a touring fit-out and you can blow past those limits before the fridge is even packed, which risks your insurance, your warranty and an inspection. An Outback Armour GVM upgrade raises the legal ceiling and re-engineers the suspension to safely carry it.

  • More legal payload for accessories, touring and towing
  • Restored ride, handling and braking under load
  • Keeps your insurance and registration valid
  • Matched to how you actually load your 4×4

Would highly recommend All Four x 4 Service Centre. From the first contact with Michael to arrange the GVM upgrade, to Alex who served me on the day of upgrade and pickup the next day, all could not have been any friendlier and professional. Job done on time and even took the time to explain what had been done and what to expect. Great friendly team of staff. Dealing with your company was a pleasure from start to finish.

Thanks Adam, great service. All4x4 organised a GVM/GCM upgrade for my new D-MAX pre-rego, they liaised with the dealer and took care of all registration details. Seamless service. Very much appreciated.

Common questions

Outback Armour GVM upgrades, answered

What is an Outback Armour GVM upgrade?

It is a complete, certified suspension package designed to safely increase your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) rating. Built and tested in Australia, the kit centres on load-rated springs and shocks, with air-bag and sway-bar hardware plus the compliance components, so you can legally carry more.

Digressive vs Adjustable Internal Bypass shocks, which should I choose?

Digressive (DSV) shocks deliver consistent, controlled damping and are a great set-and-forget choice for endurance touring and fleet use. Adjustable Internal Bypass shocks give you 20+ damping settings so you can dial in compression to suit varying loads, on- and off-road. Tell us how you use the vehicle and we will recommend the right valving.

What do the Trail, Expedition and Expedition HD load ratings mean?

They describe how much load the kit is engineered to carry. Trail suits lighter touring loads, Expedition steps up for heavier, regular loads, and Expedition HD is for the heaviest, permanently loaded rigs. We match the rating to how you actually load your 4×4.

What is the difference between pre-registration and post-registration?

A pre-registration upgrade is completed before the vehicle is first registered and is recognised nationally. A post-registration upgrade is fitted to a vehicle already on the road and certified by an engineer through the state modification process. We offer both and will advise which suits your vehicle and timing.

Will it affect my insurance or warranty?

A properly engineered, certified and plated GVM upgrade is designed to keep you compliant, which is exactly what protects your insurance, unlike running overloaded. We will walk you through how it interacts with your specific vehicle before any work begins.
