GVM upgrades in the Hunter

Authorised dealers & fitters of GVM suspension upgrades

We’re an authorised dealer and fitter of manufacturer-approved GVM upgrade kits, so we can supply, fit and coordinate certification of your vehicle’s GVM increase, all under one roof.

If you tow, fit accessories or carry heavy loads, a GVM upgrade is often essential. Exceeding your vehicle’s factory Gross Vehicle Mass is not just unsafe, it can make the vehicle illegal to drive. We supply and install kits engineered for compliance, pre-registration for new vehicles or post-registration for those already on the road.

Why upgrade

The benefits of a GVM upgrade

Increased payload

Legally carry more weight with a certified kit, for trade, fleet or touring, without compromising roadworthiness.

Ride & control

Upgraded suspension improves comfort and handling under load, reducing body roll and boosting confidence on long trips.

Ground clearance

Maintain or improve ride height for heavy accessories and constant loads, for safe underbody clearance and a level stance.

ADR compliant

Certified kits meet the Australian Design Rules, so your upgrade is recognised, insurable and road-legal.

Legal & insured

Staying within a certified GVM avoids fines, defect notices and denied insurance claims from running overloaded.

Protects your 4WD

Reduces strain on the chassis, driveline, brakes and tyres, for fewer costly repairs and a longer vehicle life.

Authorised specialists you can trust

A certified solution, not just a suspension job.

We’re more than suspension fitters. All Four x 4 is an authorised installer for Lovells, Tough Dog, Terrain Tamer and Outback Armour, fitting each GVM kit to the manufacturer’s Second Stage Manufacturer (SSM) approval requirements.

For a new vehicle, a pre-registration upgrade is recognised nationally with no separate engineering certificate required. For a vehicle already on the road, we arrange the independent licensed certifier who inspects, certifies the upgrade and issues the modification plate, so your increased GVM is officially recognised.

Plenty of workshops can bolt in a kit. As an authorised fitter working to each manufacturer’s approval, we make sure the job is done to spec, the documentation is completed, and, where a vehicle is already registered, certification is arranged so the upgrade is road-legal and recognised by authorities such as Transport for NSW.

The result: your upgrade is fully legal, insurable and compliant with the Australian Design Rules (ADRs). Based in Kotara, we look after customers across the Hunter, Central Coast, Sydney and beyond.

Towing capacity

BTC & GCM upgrades

A GVM upgrade increases how much your vehicle can carry, it does not automatically increase what you can tow. For that you may also need a GCM (Gross Combination Mass) or BTC (Braked Towing Capacity) upgrade. Availability depends on your vehicle and the brand, some kits cover GCM and/or BTC, and many are GVM-only. Tell us your vehicle and towing setup and we’ll confirm what’s approved for it.

BTC upgrade

Where approved for your vehicle, a BTC upgrade increases your braked towing capacity so you can legally tow heavier than the factory rating, in some cases up to 4,000 kg depending on the vehicle. Engineered and tested for Australian conditions and integrated with your suspension, braking and tow setup.

GCM upgrade

Where available for your vehicle, and often paired with a GVM kit, a GCM upgrade lifts the maximum combined weight of vehicle plus trailer, so you stay within legal limits fully loaded with gear, passengers and a towed load. ADR-compliant and approved by the transport authorities, with documentation and mod plates provided.

Would highly recommend All Four x 4 Service Centre. From the first contact with Michael to arrange the GVM upgrade, to pickup the next day, all could not have been friendlier and more professional. Job done on time and even took the time to explain what had been done.

Thanks Adam, great service. All4x4 organised a GVM/GCM upgrade for my new D-MAX pre-rego, they liaised with the dealer and took care of all registration details. Seamless service. Very much appreciated.

Common questions

GVM upgrades, answered

What is a GVM upgrade?

A GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) upgrade is a certified suspension modification that raises your vehicle’s legal fully-loaded weight limit. It upgrades springs, shocks and sometimes braking and other components so you can safely and legally carry more, which matters once you add bull bars, drawers, canopies, long-range tanks and touring gear.

How much does a GVM upgrade cost?

As a guide, a GVM upgrade in Australia typically runs from around $2,500 to $6,000, depending on the vehicle, the brand and kit, and whether it is done pre- or post-registration. We quote before any work begins, so send your vehicle details and we will confirm an all-in, fitted-and-certified price.

Are GVM upgrades legal?

Yes, when fitted by an authorised installer and certified to the requirements that apply to your vehicle and state. As an authorised fitter, we supply and fit to the manufacturer’s approval and coordinate the certification and paperwork, whether your vehicle is new or already registered.

What is the difference between a pre-registration and post-registration upgrade?

A pre-registration upgrade is completed before the vehicle is first registered and is recognised nationally, with no separate engineering certificate required. A post-registration upgrade is fitted to a vehicle already on the road and certified by a licensed engineer through the state modification process. We offer both and will advise which suits your vehicle and timing.

Does a GVM upgrade increase my towing capacity or GCM?

Not on its own. A GVM upgrade raises how much the vehicle itself can carry; your Braked Towing Capacity (BTC) and Gross Combination Mass (GCM) stay as the manufacturer set them unless you also do an approved BTC or GCM upgrade. Some kits, such as selected Lovells applications, offer GCM increases, mostly pre-registration. Tell us how you tow and we will confirm what applies.

Will it affect my insurance or registration?

In a good way. A properly engineered, certified and plated upgrade keeps your vehicle insurable and legally registered, and it helps you avoid the insurance problems that come with running overloaded.

What happens if I exceed my GVM?

Running over your GVM can mean fines and defect notices, denied insurance claims after an accident, compromised braking and handling, and accelerated wear on your chassis, driveline, brakes and tyres.

Which brands do you fit?

We supply and fit certified kits from Lovells, Tough Dog, Terrain Tamer and Outback Armour. Each brand page lists its ratings and vehicle compatibility, and we will recommend the right kit for how you load and use your 4×4.

How do I get a price?

Use any Get a quote button on this page, or call the workshop on (02) 4041 4080. Tell us your vehicle and how you load it, and we will confirm the right kit, rating and certification path.
