Why a 4000KG BTC Upgrade on a Toyota Landcruiser 300 Series?

The Toyota Landcruiser 300 Series boasts a solid towing capacity of 3500kg, making it a strong contender for hauling trailers and caravans. However, a key factor to consider is payload, which becomes a significant concern when towing heavy loads.

The Payload Challenge:

While the Landcruiser 300 Series can handle a hefty trailer, its payload capacity shrinks significantly when the vehicle is loaded heavily. Here's the breakdown:

Towing a full 3500kg trailer leaves just over 620kg available for passengers, gear, and accessories.

But wait, there's more! The trailer's tow-ball weight (typically around 10% of trailer weight) needs to be factored into the payload.

With a 3500kg trailer, the tow ball would weigh around 350kg. This reduces your usable payload to a mere 270kg.

That's not much wiggle room for passengers, luggage, and any additional equipment you might need for your adventure.

So, is the Landcruiser 300 Series a towing dud?

Not necessarily. Here's a deeper dive:

Landcruiser 300 Series Towing Strengths:

  • Powerful Engine: The new 3.3-litre V6 diesel engine delivers impressive torque and power, making it easy to haul heavy loads and maintain good highway speeds. The sequential turbocharger setup provides early and effortless boost, ideal for towing situations.
  • Smooth Transmission: The 10-speed automatic transmission smoothly handles gear changes even under load, ensuring a comfortable towing experience.
  • Suspension Options: The standard suspension offers a soft and comfortable ride, but on rough terrain with a heavy trailer, it might feel a bit floaty. Higher-end models with adaptive suspension can firm up the damping for better control while towing.

Strategies for Maximizing Payload:

  • Pack Light: Prioritize essential gear and avoid unnecessary items to keep weight down.
  • Upgrade GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass): Consider a federally approved GVM upgrade to increase payload capacity. This can be an option for those who plan on frequent heavy towing. However, it adds complexity and cost.
  • Main topic of our discussion: increase the towing capacity by also upgrading your Landcruiser Braked Towing Capacity (BTC)

Why consider a Lovells BTC Upgrade?

The Lovells 4000kg BTC Upgrade Kit will suit any vehicle owner who needs to increase the towing capacity over the original OE rating: this includes Government departments, mining companies, farmers, tradesmen, large and small businesses, and even individuals.

What components your 300 series Landcruiser would get from the BTC upgrade Kit ?

The Stage 2 kit is recommended for towing 3500kg - 4000kg apparatusand is by far the more popular kit for people towing heavy Caravans and Trailers; how the weight is applied to the vehicle can have a huge impact on traction, braking, andhauling and steering.
